    Description

We purchased a set of 9 of these at an estate a couple years ago, and have since sold three. Now that we have an idea of value, we will be selling the rest as Buy It Now or best offer. Besides these nine, we only know of one other.
Rare antique Japanese Kutani type porcelain plate. Dates to the early 20th century, very late Meiji or Taisho. Very unusual “Western” decoration portraying Russian Czar Nicholas II on his famous visit to Japan in 1891. We believe the Japanese gentleman in Western attire may depict Prince Arisugawa Takehito, who accompanied Nicholas II on his visit. Other figures include Japanese citizens meeting Nicholas II’s entourage, including members of the Russian navy.
For fans of history, we recommend finding and reading the online article “How Nicholas II almost got killed in Japan,” by George Manaev. It’s possible this plate was part of Japan’s nationwide effort to smooth over bad feelings around the Otsu Incident.
Plate approximately 6 1/16” wide. Excellent overall condition with no cracks, some wear to enamels, couple of almost microscopic fleabites on edge, old tape residue on back. Please zoom in and study all photos. Display stand not included.
